Expedia Group Media Solutions just released its Q4 2021 Travel Trends Report. What are the most important findings? What do the numbers tell us about the tourism recovery process? Let's analyze it starting from the data reported by Travel Daily News . Jennifer Andre, global vice president, Media Solutions says: “The pandemic continued to impact travel around the world through the end of 2021, but in the fourth quarter we saw increasing global search volumes, longer search windows and more international destinations […]. Consumers have learned to travel in ever-changing circumstances, and we expect they will continue to adapt and evolve their behaviors and preferences as the situation evolves. We remain confident in the power of travel and the resilience of the industry and travelers .” These are the encouraging words from Expedia's top management, but on what factors is such optimism based? First of all, a boundless desire to travel. The desire to travel is growing The report reveals an insatiable appetite for travel compared to 2020.
Global search volume in the fourth quarter increased UAE Phone Number more than 70% year over year , indicating that travelers are still eager to pack their bags. In APAC, search volumes increased nearly 35% compared to the third quarter, driven by the reopening of international borders in several countries, including Australia, Singapore and Fiji. Global searches have increased week after week, also helped by news such as the reopening of the United States border on November 8 to vaccinated travelers from 33 countries. The desire to travel is also borne out by an apparent resilience in traveler mindsets, as indicated by accommodation cancellation rates , which remained stable throughout the fourth quarter, despite the ongoing and unpredictable headwinds of the pandemic. Booking search windows are getting longer With borders around the world gradually reopening to international travelers in the fourth quarter, the global search window is expanding. Expedia's report reveals that more than 40% of global searches fell within the 31-day search window , an increase of 15% compared to the third quarter.
Regionally, EMEA saw the greatest swing towards longer search windows. In the fourth quarter, 60% of global domestic searches fell within the 0 to 21 day search window, declining slightly quarter-over-quarter, as travelers searched further afield for domestic travel, particularly during the holiday season. Demand for long-haul destinations The trend noted in the second quarter – travelers searching for and booking more distant destinations – is confirmed in the fourth quarter. Expedia's Travel Trends Report illustrates how 68% of Americans plan to travel to distant destinations and many are targeting intercontinental destinations such as Rome, Bali, London and Paris in 2022. Paris, Dubai, Mexico City, Tokyo and Madrid reported double-digit quarter-over-quarter growth in hotel bookings. Out of the 25 most booked destinations globally, Dubai rose from 18th position in the third quarter to sixth in the fourth quarter, driven by a 40% increase in room bookings quarter-on-quarter. In the same period, Tokyo went from 41st to 24th, Mexico City from 23rd to 17th and Paris from 12th to 5th. Vacation rentals remain popular The last interesting data from the Expedia report concerns global accommodation bookings, for hotels and vacation homes: in the fourth quarter they increased by more than 50% year over year. Comparing bookings in the third quarter and the fourth quarter, we note a shift in the share from hotels to holiday homes , also thanks to the tendency to travel in groups, with friends or families.
