First off, welcome to the Corvsport.com message boards! We're glad to have you!
To answer your question, yes, all late-model C4 Corvettes had known mechanical issues in the areas you were asking about. As with any car, there are some that are worse than others, and there are some that are just going to be a "problem child". At the same time, we've known many C4 owners who absolutely love their cars. With that in mind, let me share a couple of common issues that do trouble the newer (1993-1996) C4 Corvettes.
1.) The Opti-Spark Ignition System has been known to fail on late model C4 Corvettes (those equipped with PFI V8 engines). Failure of the Opti-Spark Ignition System may prevent the vehicle from starting.
2.) Failure of the Ignition Lock Cylinder occurs, though infrequently, preventing the vehicle from starting.
3.) A transmission leak may occur from the pump body on 4L60-E transmissions due to the pump bushing walking out of the valve body.
As with any car, higher mileage engines are prone to issues of leaking gaskets and seals, mechanically compromised components (including bearings, piston rings, etc.) It is our recommendation that you have the car inspected by a GM Certified Mechanic prior to making your purchase. While that doesn't offer you any guarantees, it should at least give you the peace of mind that there aren't any glaring issues on the car or, if there are, at least you'll be informed before you make your purchase.
I hope this answer helps you in your potential purchase. Thanks again for visiting Corvsport.com and welcome aboard!
